Weekend trip to Lancelin

Anne-Marie and Mike were not working this weekend, so it was great to have them around to show me the sights. First stop of the weekend was a leisurely brunch in Cottesloe to try and rid ourselves of hangover from the previous night. Brunch seems to be a really big thing here, and the menu was amazing... every fresh juice or smoothie you can think of, plus pancakes, fruit, muesli, or of course a full English.

Then we packed up the jeep and headed north up the coast to Lancelin. This is a tiny town (well, village really) about 2 hours drive from Perth. It is as far as you can go on the coast road... further north the road is an unmade track.

The main features of Lancelin are:
1. The dunes, which are beautiful and turn amazing colours at sunset.
2. The wind, which makes it a top destination for windsurfers.
However, it also makes it an almost impossible place for sunbathing. Whilst Mike kite-surfed, Anne-Marie and I stumbled around the beach, trying to find a spot sheltered from the wind. There wasn't one. As soon as we lay down to sunbath, we got mouthfuls of sand, which also stuck to the suncream we had just applied, with comical (in retrospect) results. Not the most pleasant sunbathing session ever.

After heading to our motel to extract sand from every nook, we went for a drive on the dunes. This made the whole day worthwhile - they were fantastic. Finished off the day with dinner of fresh lobster and a few glasses of white wine.

On Sunday the weather had clouded over, so, after fried breakfast at the only cafe in town - a greasy spoon where I don't think they had ever heard of muesli or smoothies - we headed back to Perth to chill out at the house.
