Mornington Peninsula

A short car drive south of Melbourne, the opposite side of the bay, lies the Mornington Peninsula. Bumble (an English friend over with the London Rowing Club boys) and I had a great day exploring both the calm bay-side and ocean beaches of Portsea and Sorrento, and swam in the turquoise waters of Rye beach – refreshing but gorgeous!

We also visited Arthur’s Seat, the highest point of the peninsula, and were just about able to make out the Melbourne skyline rising through the mist in the distance. (Actually, it was quite clear with the naked eye, but the camera struggled!). The small inland area of the peninsula was also beautiful and remarkably unspoilt.




On the way back we stopped at a winery for some wine tasting (and, inevitably, purchasing) and then again at Brighton beach, which is just south of St Kilda. There we saw the beautifully maintained, colourful beach boxes and admired some spectacular views of the city.


In the evening we caught another stunning sunset at a lovely beachside restaurant in St Kilda called the Stokehouse, where we were joined by some of the LRC boys for an excellent dinner. We even managed to squeeze in a delicious ice-cream from a parlour in Ackland St which is rapidly becoming my ''local'' - I just can't stay away!
